They offer an opportunity for a global commitment to breaking intergenerational transmission of poverty, violence, exclusion and discrimination – and realizing our vision of a life of dignity for all."
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

On December 19, 2011, the United Nations declared 11 October as the International Day of the Girl Child, to recognize girls’ rights and to raise people's consciousness about the terrible situations and conditions in which little girls and young women are forced to live in the world today, forced to arranged marriages, adolescent motherhood, violations or sexual slavery and deprived of basic human rights just for their genre condition.
